I Stopped Reading Generic Travel Lists
I grew up in La Laguna, the former capital of Tenerife, a colonial city whose cobbled streets and pastel townhouses I explored on foot long before I understood their history. But it was Teide that shaped me. When I was eight years old, my father took me on the cable car to the upper station. I remember standing at the viewing platform, looking down at the valley where I lived, and realising that the mountain I'd seen from my bedroom window every morning was something entirely different up close, not a background feature, but a world of its own.
That moment stayed with me. Over ten years I've guided more than 500 groups to the summit of Spain's highest peak. I still recommend the Teide National Park - Dinner, Sunset & Stargazing Experience more than any other, it's the experience that changed my life; I met my wife leading a sunset group on that mountain.
And somewhere along the way, I started noticing something. Visitors kept booking the wrong tours, not because they'd made bad choices, but because every generic travel list they'd read about Tenerife was written by someone who'd spent an afternoon on Google. The recommendations were interchangeable: "top 10 things to do," "best tours in Tenerife", all featuring the same products in a different order, all reading like ads for whoever paid the most, none explaining who a tour was NOT for.
I built this guide to fix that. Every tour on this site is compared honestly, not against some imaginary suitable, but against the other options available right now. I tell you what each experience is actually like, who it suits, and who should choose something else. If a tour's quality drops, I remove it. If prices change, I update them. This is the guide I wish visitors had when they arrived.
Who I Am, A Decade on the Mountain
Alejandro Vega, Canarian Outdoor Specialist
- Born in La Laguna, raised exploring Tenerife's volcanic landscapes
- 10 years as a licensed guide across Teide National Park, the Anaga Rural Park, and the Teno Massif
- Former park ranger at Teide National Park
- Led 500+ guided groups to the summit of Teide (3,715m)
- Led guided stargazing sessions at 3,715m for visitors from around the world
- Knows Teide's weather patterns, cable car moods, and where to find the most memorable post-hike mojo picon on the island
- Lives in the La Orotava valley with his wife, who he met leading a sunset tour on Teide
This island changed my life in more ways than one. I know it intimately, and I want visitors to experience the real Tenerife, not the sanitised version sold by all-inclusive resorts, but the volcanic, alpine, cloud-forest island that I fell in love with as a child and still love guiding people through today. If you want to walk the volcanic terrain with someone who knows every trail, I recommend the Small Group Teide National Park Volcanic and Forest Wonders for a proper introduction to the lunar landscapes above 2,000 metres.
How I Review Tours
Each tour on this site is evaluated across seven criteria: price, duration, group size, cancellation policy, traveller rating, reviewer consensus, and suitability for different traveller types. I prioritise tours that offer free cancellation (the norm in Tenerife's competitive tour market), clear meeting point instructions, and multilingual guides.
Tours with consistently mixed reviews for the same issues, overcrowding, poor equipment, unreliable pickup, are excluded regardless of affiliate commission rates. I update recommendations quarterly, with pricing verified against current rates before each update cycle. If a tour's quality declines or a better option becomes available, I update the relevant page within two weeks.
Every category page includes a clear comparison of the available options, flagging what each experience is suitable for, and just as importantly, who it might NOT suit. A sunset Whale watching catamaran that's great for a couple's anniversary may feel too slow for a group of adventure-seeking friends, and I'll tell you that upfront.
What I Do
- Research every tour across multiple review sources
- Compare similar experiences side-by-side with honest trade-offs
- Flag what each tour is suitable for, and who it's NOT for
- Update pricing and availability quarterly
- Remove tours when quality drops, regardless of affiliate relationships
What I Don't Do
- Publish generic "top 10" lists with no real comparison
- Recommend tours I haven't verified exist
- Use affiliate relationships to influence rankings
- Keep outdated recommendations on the site

Final Note
Whether you're hiking Teide at sunrise, watching whales from a catamaran, eating papas arrugadas at a guachinche in La Orotava, or standing at the edge of the Los Gigantes cliffs wondering how basalt can stack 600 metres straight out of the Atlantic, I hope this guide helps you find the Tenerife that's worth travelling for. The one that exists beyond the resort strip and the generic blog posts. The one I've been showing visitors for ten years.
