Paragliding vs Helicopter in Tenerife: Which Aerial Experience Wins?

How paragliding and helicopter flights differ

I have guided hundreds of people across the summits of Teide, watched sunrises from 3,715 meters, and had pilot whales three meters from my kayak. But until May 2024 I had never flown. Literally. I'm a man of solid ground, my feet prefer basalt and pumice. But when a client asked me for the third time whether a paragliding flight or a helicopter flight over Tenerife was more worth it, I knew I had to try both. As a matter of professional responsibility.

I did it in May 2024: first tandem paragliding from Taucho, then the helicopter flight from the south. Both are aerial experiences, yes. But they are as different as walking across the Teide caldera and diving in Los Gigantes. One gives you vertigo and the wind on your face. The other gives you perspective and silence. And neither one is the "right" choice for everyone.

I started with the Paragliding flight Tenerife South. The appointment was at 12:00 at the meeting point near Costa Adeje. Liability waiver, use, helmet. The pilot, a Canarian from Icod with 15 years of experience, looked at me and said: "Nervous?" I lied and said no.

We drove up in a four-wheel drive to the takeoff area in Taucho, at 850m altitude. The wind was blowing from the northeast, ideal for takeoff. The pilot spread the wing out over the dry grass, checked the lines, and gave me my instructions: "When I tell you, run toward the ravine. Don't stop. Even if the ground disappears beneath you, keep running."

I ran. The emptiness arrived. And suddenly, the silence of takeoff broke as the air caught the wing and my own feet were left dangling 200m above the ground. We climbed in a thermal that lifted us 400 meters in 90 seconds. Below, the TF-1 looked like a gray thread, Costa Adeje a toy model. We circled with a couple of buzzards that ignored us completely. We landed at Playa de la Enramada 22 minutes later. My legs were shaking for 10 minutes.

Paragliding is pure adrenaline. You feel the wind, the swaying, the weightlessness. There's no window, no structure, just you and the air. But it has one important catch: it depends on the wind. If the wind doesn't blow in the right direction or the thermal doesn't form, the flight gets shortened or cancelled. That's why I recommend booking it at the start of your trip, so you have room to reschedule.

For those who want more altitude and flight time, there is the Silver version, which departs from a higher point and offers 1,000m of vertical drop. I tried it on another occasion, and those extra 5 minutes of flight make a real difference. It's worth paying a bit more.

The helicopter flight, perspective without vertigo

Three days later I booked a scenic helicopter flight from the Adeje heliport. Departure at 10:00, 30 minutes of flight over the west coast and Teide. The helicopter, a Robinson R44 with capacity for 3 passengers plus the pilot. Noise-cancelling headsets, a four-point seatbelt, and a huge window on each side.

The takeoff is smooth, with almost no sense of movement. Within two minutes we were at 600m flying over Los Gigantes. And that's where I understood the difference. From the helicopter you see the real scale of the cliffs, a 600m vertical drop that looks large from below but is overwhelming from above. You see the turquoise blue of the continental shelf, the contrast with the deep blue of the channel, and in the background, La Gomera like a green silhouette.

The helicopter gives you the bird's-eye view that paragliding can't offer: you see the entire coastline, snow-capped Teide in the distance, the ravines from their source down to the sea. It's a contemplative experience, not an adrenaline one. There's no wind on your face, no vertigo. It's like watching a documentary in 4K, except you're inside it.

The trouble with the helicopter is the price. A 30-minute flight costs between 150 and 250€ per person. Paragliding costs 85-120€. For the same budget, you can do two paragliding flights or one helicopter flight. And the helicopter doesn't give you the feeling of real flight, you're inside a machine, not part of the air.

Why paragliding almost won me over

After both experiences, I took stock. The helicopter is spectacular, but paragliding left a deeper mark on me. Why? Because paragliding is active. You take part in the flight, you run, you feel the takeoff, you notice the thermals, you see the ground from a perspective that only birds know. In the helicopter you're a passenger. You pay to see, not to feel.

What's more, paragliding has a surprise factor the helicopter can't match: uncertainty. You don't know exactly what the thermal will be like, whether you'll find a buzzard riding your same current, whether you'll land smoothly or with a bit of crosswind. That makes it more exciting. The helicopter is predictable, safe, comfortable. But it won't get your pulse racing.

For the traveler looking for an aerial experience in Tenerife, my general recommendation is: if you can only choose one, choose paragliding. It's cheaper, more intense, and gives you a story to tell. The helicopter is for those with a generous budget, who don't want vertigo, or who need aerial photos for work.

Silver 1,000m paragliding flight, the complete experience

If you decide to go paragliding, don't settle for the basic version. The SILVER 1000m paragliding Tenerife offers 5-10 more minutes of flight and a higher launch altitude. In my experience, those extra minutes are the highlight of the flight, once you've gotten past the initial fear and start truly enjoying it. The landscape from 1,000m is wider, you see more coastline, more ravines, and on clear days, La Gomera and El Hierro on the horizon.

The Silver costs about 30-40€ more than the basic flight. It's worth every euro. If you're only going to fly once in your life, do it properly.

The moment I made my decision

It was during the helicopter flight, flying over the Barranco del Infierno. The pilot pointed north: "There, on the left, you can see the Taucho takeoff spot." And sure enough, from 900m altitude I saw the small patch of grass where I had run three days earlier. I saw a wing unfurling, a person running toward the void. And I felt envy. I wanted to be out there, with the wind on my face, not inside a bubble of plastic and metal.

That was the moment. The helicopter showed me Tenerife. Paragliding made me feel it.

That said, I know plenty of people for whom the helicopter is the right choice: my mother (70 years old, afraid of heights), my photographer friend (needs stability for photos), families with young children (paragliding has age and weight limits). For them, the helicopter is ideal.

But for the average traveler who wants an aerial experience in Tenerife, my answer is clear: paragliding first, helicopter only if you have budget and time to spare.

What I wish I had known before going

Here are the lessons I learned from these two experiences, which I apply to any aerial activity on the island:

• Book paragliding at the start of your trip. The wind is unpredictable. If it's cancelled due to weather, you need a few days' margin to reschedule. Don't leave it for the last day.
• Dress for the altitude. In Taucho (850m) it's 5-8°C colder than on the coast. On Teide (3,555m) the difference is 15-20°C. Bring a windbreaker even if it's July. The wind at takeoff cools things down a lot.
• Don't eat heavily before flying. Paragliding on a full stomach isn't a good idea. A light breakfast, fruit, water. No fried food or dairy.
• The helicopter allows more gear. If you're bringing a DSLR camera, a tripod, or want to film in 4K, the helicopter gives you space and stability. With paragliding you can only bring a small camera strapped to your wrist or a GoPro on your helmet.
• Both require advance booking in high season. In July-August and around Christmas, flights fill up weeks in advance. Don't show up without a reservation.
• Ask about insurance. Reputable companies carry liability and accident insurance. If they don't mention it, ask. If they hesitate, look for another company.

And one extra tip for those who want the full experience: combine paragliding with a trip to Teide the following day. The contrast between flying over the coast and walking across the volcanic caldera is what makes Tenerife a distinctive destination. There aren't many places where you can take off from 850m, land on the beach, and the next day be at 3,715m walking on solidified lava.
